Course overview

In this informative and practical course, you will learn about the signs and symptoms of common and disabling mental health problems in adolescence, how to provide initial help, where and how to get professional help, what sort of help has been shown by research to be effective, and how to provide mental health first aid in a crisis situation using a practical, evidence-based action plan.

Course content includes case studies, videos and resources tailored to the learning needs of tertiary student participants.

 

Blended Online Youth Course BLG

Course participants 
will receive:

  • The highest leave of professional accredited facilitation
     

  • A copy of the most current Standard MHFA Manual
     

  • Additional industry-relevant  supplement manuals and resources- where required
     

  • Registration and management of accreditation for all participants- including tracking of 3-year refresher requirements for full MHFA courses
     

  • Ongoing post-training support and MHFA counselling for MHFA officers
     

  • A Certificate of Completion &/or accreditation

Components:

Course Component 1 – Self-paced interactive eLearning (5-7 hours)
The eLearning course component presents an overview of mental health problems and mental health crises.

Developing mental health problems covered include:

  • Depression

  • Anxiety problems

  • Psychosis

  • Eating disorders

  • Substance use problems

Mental health crises covered:

  • Suicidal thoughts and behaviours

  • Non-suicidal self-injury

  • Panic attacks

  • Traumatic events

  • Severe psychotic states

  • Severe effects from alcohol or other drug use

  • Aggressive behaviour

 

Delivery

Course Component 2 -Instructor-led component delivered as:

- An instructor-led video conferencing (3 x 2.5-hour sessions)​

- Single (8 hours) face-to-face session

Component 2 provides course participants with an opportunity to revise content covered in the self-paced eLearning program and to consolidate the application of this content with the development of practical skills in a group environment online.

Course Component 2 provides participants with the opportunity to:

  • Revise the eLearning content and the MHFA Action Plan

  • Clarify any points of uncertainty remaining after completion of the eLearning modules

  • Apply the MHFA Action Plan to relevant scenarios

  • Discuss and reflect 'a where to from now' in using mental health first aid skills

  • Develop a self-care plan to maintain good mental health.

Both course components of the course are to be completed within a 3-month period.

Investment

The cost of the eLearning (Course Component 1 ) is included in BLLC's total price. Only BLLC can purchase the codes required to create the login and access the MHFA eLearning platform. BLLC pays the set amount (approx $60 pp) for each code directly to MHFA Australia. Once booking and payment has been made, BLLC will provide the single-use codes required to the organising person to be distributed accordingly.  The eLearning component price includes a hard copy MHFA Manual and platform access. Group orders or bookings include a single postage delivery of manuals. 

Who can enrol

Any interested adult can attend the training.

Please be reminded, that this course should not be considered therapy or a support group session.

Accreditation & CPD Points

On completion of the course, participants are asked to complete a short online exam, open-book online of approx 15 questions. Upon passing, participants will receive their Mental Health First Aiders Certificate which is valid for another 3 year period.

After which, participants will be required to attend a full 2-day session, as 6 years would have passed from their original training date.​

If participants do not wish to complete the exam they are presented with a certificate of completion.

Completing Blended Online Youth Mental Health First Aid will contribute 10 hours and 30 minutes of NSW Education Standards Authority

(NESA) Accredited PD in the priority area of Student/child mental health addressing standard descriptors 4.1.2, 4.4.2, 7.3.2 from the Australian Professional Standards for Teachers towards maintaining Proficient Teacher Accreditation in NSW.

Completing Blended Youth Mental Health First Aid will contribute 11 hours of NSW Education Standards Authority (NESA) Accredited PD in the priority area of Student/child mental health addressing standard descriptors 4.1.2, 4.4.2, 7.3.2 from the Australian Professional Standards for Teachers towards maintaining Proficient Teacher Accreditation in NSW.

A note on Virtual Delivery- 

  • The Instructor-led virtual sessions are live meetings conducted over the internet using video conferencing software (your Instructor will provide a link for you to the platform they use).

  • As a participant, you will need a quiet location where you will have privacy.

  • You can attend via your computer or tablet as you will need to be able to read the screen easily. The Instructor needs to be able to see and hear you for you to participate in the training therefore access to a camera and a microphone for the duration of the session is mandatory. If your computer doesn’t have a microphone or camera built-in you can still attend via your computer but will need to be also on camera using your smartphone or tablet at the same time.
