Youth Refresher Course

MHFA REFRESHER ACCREDITATION

Youth Refresher Mental Health First Aid

Course overview

This course gives participants an opportunity to refresh the knowledge and skills learnt during the 14-hour Youth Mental Health First Aid Course.

You will:

  • Gain an understanding of the latest research in the mental health field

  • Learn the 3 key actions for helping someone feeling suicidal

  • Work through complex mental health first aid interactions

  • Practice mental health first aid skills.

Points of interest:

  • This refresher can be conducted Face to Face or via videoconferencing tecnology- see below.

  • There are three different Refresher courses available. MHFAiders should do the same type of refresher course as their original MHFA course to renew their accreditation, as each refresher course is based on a different set of guidelines.  For example, if your original accrediation was in the Youth MHFA, in order to renew your accrediation, you must enroll in a Youth Refresher course, either F2F or online.

Course Structure

& Inclusions:

At BLLC we pride ourselves on working with each organisation to find and create the perfect structure for course delivery.

This is a 4-hour course, which can be delivered as either:

  • Face-to-face- on client site as a single session

  • Virtually/ Online- as a single session

A note on Virtual Delivery

The Instructor-led virtual sessions are live meetings conducted over the internet using video conferencing software (your Instructor will provide a link for you to the platform they use).

As a participant you will need a quiet location where you will have privacy.
You can attend via your computer or tablet as you will need to be able to read the screen easily. The Instructor needs to be able to see and hear you for you to participate in the training therefore access to a camera and a microphone for the duration of the session is mandatory. If your computer doesn’t have a microphone or camera built in you can still attend via your computer but will need to be also on camera using your smart phone or tablet at the same time.

Course participants
will receive:

  • The highest leave of professional accredited facilitation

  • A copy of the most current Youth MHFA Manual

  • Additional industry-relevant  supplement manuals and resources- where required

  • Registration and management of accreditation for all participants- including tracking of 3-year refresher requirements for full MHFA courses

  • Ongoing post-training support and MHFA counselling for MHFA officers

  • A Certificate of Completion &/or accreditation

What can your team expect from this nationally recognised accreditation?

  • Participants are equipped with correct knowledge and appropriate tools to handle crisis situations within an emotionally sensitive and legally appropriate manner.

  • A reduction in staff and clients arriving at a crisis point undetected.

  • A clear and consistent protocol to ensure the emotional and physical wellbeing of staff and clients.

  • Pressure on welfare officers and team leaders is reduced by having fellow adults correctly identifying and referring people in need.

  • Improved personal mental health of participants & reduction of stigmatic attitudes.

  • Confidence in providing mental health first aid alongside increased support shown to co-workers.

Who can enroll

Refresher courses are 4 hour face-to-face or 4 hours online courses that allow people who have previously completed a core Mental Health First Aid course to refresh their knowledge and skills. Completed on it's own will not provide accredition an individual.

For people who are Accredited MHFAiders, the refresher courses offer an opportunity to extend their accreditation for a further 3 years.

Please be reminded, this course should not be considered therapy or a support group session.

Accreditation & CPD Points

On completion of the course, participates are asked to complete a short online exam, open-book online of approx 15 questions. Upon passing participates will receive their Mental Health First Aiders Certificate which is valid for another 3 year period.

After which, participants will be required to attend a full 2 day session, as 6 years would have passed from their original training date.

If participants do not wish to complete the exam they are presented with a certificate of completion.

Most professionals can claim attendance towards Continuing Professional Development (CPD) within their industry body. Please check with your relevant industry body or BLLC if you are unsure of allocation points. NSW Teachers see top of page.
