Course Overview
​
Standard Mental Health First Aid for Legal Professionals teaches participants how to provide initial support to another adult who may be experiencing a mental health problem or mental health crisis, until professional help is received or the crisis resolves.
​
Course participants learn about the signs and symptoms of common mental health problems in adults, how to recognise and respond to an emerging or worsening mental health problem, and the treatments and supports available.
​
Using a practical, evidence-based action plan, course participants learn how to approach someone they are concerned about and initiate a conversation about those concerns. Participants also learn how to offer initial support and information and how to encourage the person to seek professional help or other supports.

Components:

Developing mental health problems covered include:

Depression

​The course includes content, crisis situations, case studies, and videos tailored to the unique needs of adults working in the legal profession.
Delivery
​​​
Course Component 1 – Self-paced interactive eLearning (5-7 hours)
The eLearning course component presents an overview of mental health problems and mental health crises. Component 1 must be completed before attending Component 2.

Course Component 2 -Instructor-led component delivered as either:
- 4 hr face-to-face instructor-led session (Blended)
- 1 x 5 hour virtual instructor lead session (Blended Online)

Component 2 provides course participants with an opportunity to revise content covered in the self-paced eLearning program and to consolidate the application of this content with the development of practical skills in a group environment online.​
Course Component 2 provides participants with the opportunity to:

Revise the eLearning content and the MHFA Action Plan

Clarify any points of uncertainty remaining after the completion of the eLearning modules

Apply the MHFA Action Plan to relevant scenarios

Discuss and reflect on 'a where to from now' in using mental health first aid skills

Develop a self-care plan to maintain good mental health.

Suitable for individuals ( over 18 years), working within the legal industry.Please note, this course is not a therapy or support group session.

Accreditation & CPD Points
Upon completing the course, participants will take a short, open-book online exam. Passing this exam earns participants a Mental Health First Aider Certificate, valid for three years.
Should participants not wish to complete the exam, they are presented with a certificate of completion with CPD points awarded regardless of exam completion. Most professionals can claim attendance towards Continuing Professional Development (CPD) within their industry body. Please check with your relevant industry body if you are unsure of allocation points.​​​

A note on Virtual Delivery
​
The Instructor-led virtual sessions are live meetings conducted using video conferencing software. As a participant, you will need a quiet location that provides privacy. Instructors need to be able to see and hear participants at all times; therefore, access to a camera and a microphone for the duration of the session is mandatory.
